foodbynorth: Feeding People, Charity, Food Costs, and the Price Hike So here is today’s menu everybody. If you follow us closely, you will see that many of our food items have gone up a dollar. It was a difficult decision for us - financial accessibility is an extremely important part of what we do here - but there were many reasons for it. The first was the charitable aspect of what we do here. We want to feed people - not just in the restaurant but across the city and state. So we are happy to say that $.50 from the sale of each item (not just feasts) will now go to a local food based charity. Before now, $3 from each feast would be donated, but we wanted to be able to give more. This changeover will allow us to generate more money for whatever food based cause we are supporting at the time, and hopefully make a real impact on the community as a whole. We will be taking suggestions via twitter, facebook, tumblr, and email on new worthy food based charities that we can help support. We want to feed as many people as we can. The second reason for the increased prices is from rising food costs. The cost of ingredients has been continually rising at an alarming rate since we opened. The second $.50 will help the restaurant make enough money to help pay our staff a living and fair wage, along with (hopefully) getting everybody health insurance. We don’t make a lot of money at the restaurant - I have yet to take a check in the last five months. But rising costs have risked the security of the rest of the staff’s pay, and unfortunately those rising costs have to be reflected in the prices we charge. We will continue to be creative in the methods that we source and prepare food in order to keep prices low, but we needed to increase prices a bit. I made $10/hour for ten years, I know what it is like to not be able to spend a lot of money on dinner. Our drink prices are still very reasonable. A person can still come into our restaurant and have a satisfying bowl of food and a beer for less than $15. But giving our staff a living wage and feeding not just those who can afford to eat at our restaurant is also extremely important to us.
